Oct. 10th class- Rhapsodic Types immersed in wattage of insight"

Shelley's defense should bring to mind Sydney's Apology...both are rhapsodic, both vindicate poetry on morality.  Shelly goes beyond Sydney..climatic metaphor: Unacknowledged...
rhapsodic: Immoderately impassioned or enthusiastic.

Anagogical-Monad
Archetypal-Myth
  1. Pg. 97 (Kari) "It is hardly possible to accept a critical view which confuses the original with the aboriginal, and imagines that a 'creative' poet sits down with a pencil and some blank paper and eventually produces a new poem in a special act of creation ex nihilo."
  2. The real original person goes back to the origins (Sexson)
  3. Pg. 100 (Dustin) "In short, we can get a whole liberal education..."
Formal (New criticism)-Image
  1. Pg. 84 (Maggie) (100 watts) "One could hardly find a more elementary critical principle than the fact that the events of a literary fiction are not real but hypothetical events." Fake.
  2. Pg. 87 form not content. Interlocking series of images.  "What the poet meant to say is literally the poem itself."
  3. Pg. 93 "The conception of art as having a relationship with reality..." (new definition of catharsis- exhilaration or exuberance) "The sense of buoyancy or release that accompanies PERFECT DISCIPLINE, when we can no longer know the dancer from the dance."

Descriptive-Sign
  1. A dictionary, which is primarily...sign-values, means nothing without understood prior meaning. (Judson) Pg. 79
  2. Pg. 78 (Dustin) "Descriptivelly, a poem is not primarily a work of art, but primarily a verbal structure or a set of representative words, to be classed with other verbal structures like books on gardening."
  3. Tends to be realistic and didactic (Teaches you something)
  4. We need to get out of it.

Literal-Motif- A collection of letters. Understanding the whole of it as it stands.
  1. (Ben) Pg.77 "And if a poem cannot be literally anything but a poem, then the literal basis of meaning in poetry can only be in its letters, its inner structure of interlocking motifs."
Ben's mnemonic device- not literally, letterally.

"Wattage of insight"

If we got beat up like DQ got beat up, then we would be in hospital...
Stories...
Kevin's story.  "Columbus" MT. "Kicked the shit out of us" "Eyes peeled"
We get lost in them.
Do we really want stories to be realistic?

Reality shows. Imitations of what we think of as reality. "Extreme makeover" "Brazilian butt lift"

"McCain used literary criticism 'My fellow prisoners...that this is one of the...' Lord of the Fly!!"

All I have to say is Buzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
